Information

The castle was founded by the first Duke of Naxos (13th century) on the hill of Prophet Elias, in the northwest of the island (today known as Plaka). This Venetian Castle was not surrounded by walls, like most of the castles of the Cyclades, but by the inhabitants’ houses. It was used to protect the natives from pirate attacks and it had an excellent view of Adamas Bay where all the ships were moored. Nowadays the castle is uninhabited but you can still visit it. It offers a wonderful view of the bay especially when the sun sets.
